Fishtrap Internships
Every year between May and the end of August, Fishtrap offers 1-3 internships to interested, engaged students from around the United States. These internships run from 6-12 weeks, and include apprenticeship in a particular realm of non-profit administration, a weekly intern meeting to discuss a specific topic lead by Fishtrap staff, and an independent project that benefits the organization while providing a flexible learning environment. Interns will have regular meetings with staff, and will finish the program with a written evaluation.
Past interns have worked on a comprehensive directory of past Fishtrap
Fellows, a podcast that you can view on our website, and a variety of other projects. Interns also immerse themselves for one week in Summer Fishtrap, our annual gathering of writers at Wallowa Lake, and learn about a wide variety of other programs, both local and regional.
Interns typically work an average of 30 hours a week, with some weeks requiring more effort and others allowing for additional free time. Internships are unpaid, although many colleges and universities offer grants and stipends to help cover costs. Applicants must have their own transportation, and be interested in non-profit and/or humanities-based work. Interns showing interested in contemporary Western literature, creating writing, and/or current public policy issues relevant to the American West will be given preference in the application process. To apply, please send a letter of interest (in the body of the email), resume with current transcript and a writing sample to ben@fishtrap.org. Internship decisions will be made by April 15.
